Shivani Rajan grew up within the sanctuary of the Coastal Redwoods of Canyon, CA. Due to an obsession with horses that could not be quelled by any other means, she began drawing at the age of six.
With time, she expanded her repertoire and graduated with a degree in Art from UC Santa Cruz in 2006 (and finally came to own a horse).
Now she paints as a commitment to making change. She paints with the intention to help us see and receive the incredible healing available to us in our relationship with Nature. She has observed that the stimuli-rich environments granted us by the Age of Technology have conditioned our brains to filter out "unnecessary information" which, in the end, often extends to our natural environment. We miss what things feel like. In fact, we become numb. Through painting, Shivani strives to loosen the clutch of that numbness, both for others and for herself. She hopes to slow us down, to remind us of the importance of silent moments spent alone in the wilderness. The importance of open space. The importance of feeling.
Twenty-five percent of all Ms. Rajan’s art sales benefit Save Mount Diablo, a non-profit dedicated to preserving undeveloped territories surrounding Mt. Diablo in the greater East Bay. To date, she has raised over two thousand dollars for this cause, helping preserve hundreds of acres of our natural heritage.
